If it is "onyx" it will fizz and begin to dissolve in strong acid, so try lemon juice or vinegar on an area that is not too highly polished.
You wont hurt the stone by immersing it if you take it out as soon as it starts to react and rinse it.
If it is agate, nothing at all will happen.
